Japanese

Each class visits the Japanese room for a one hour lesson each week.  These lessons are taught by Boyen Sensei.

Throughout the year, the students are involved in activities addressing Japanese language and culture.

The SACSA  framework requires students who are learning a Language other than English to be involved in learning around three main aspects; Understanding Culture, Understanding Language and Communication.

The aim is for students to learn about and appreciate another culture different from their own. Games, songs and origami are excellent ways of immersing students into Japanese language and culture.

The Early Years students learn the Japanese names of body parts and have learnt songs like the heads and shoulders, knees and toes song.  They are very good at singing in Japanese and English.

Early Years students also learn the Japanese names for some common classroom objects such as pencil, ruler, eraser and book.  They also learn some common questions relating to these words.

The Primary and Middle years students learn the Hiragana writing system.

Middle Years students are involved in interest-based discovery projects about aspects of Japan.  The students research an area of interest and present their discovery to their classes.  They are encouraged to use ICT and Public Speaking to share their learning.
